Book Lovers Day encourages you to find a place in the shade to relax with a good book. (August 9th and/or first Saturday in November.)

Book reading is a great hobby. It's an important one, too. Employers look for it on resumes. Reading is educational, informative, and relaxing. It makes us both smarter, and happier people.

Book Lovers Day is a great day to celebrate. Just grab an interesting book, find a quiet, cozy place, and crack open the cover. Celebrating Book Lovers Day in August is pleasurable on the deck, under a shady tree, poolside, or in a cozy hammock. If you fall asleep while reading, that's okay. It's all part of the relaxing benefits of being a book lover.

Let’s step back in time for a minute:

- The very first books used parchment or vellum (calf skin) for the book pages.

- The book covers were made of wood and often covered with leather.

- The books were fitted with clasps or straps.

- Public libraries appeared in the Middle Ages.

- Books in public libraries were often chained to a bookshelf or a desk to prevent theft.

Moving forward:

Book manufacturing’s recent development include the development of digital printing.  Book pages are printed using toner rather than ink.  The development of digital printing has also opened up the possibility of print-on-demand,  where no books are printed until after an order is received from a customer.

E-books are rapidly increasing in popularity.  E-book (electronic book) refers to a book-length publication in digital form.  They are normally available through the internet however,  can also be found on CD-ROM and other forms.  E-books are read either by computer or via a portable book display device known as an e-book reader, such as a Reader, Nook or Kindle.
